Friday Five | Prepare for Summer

Hello everyone. Without getting too far into it, these past two weeks have been pretty intense. There’s been some stuff in my personal life, as well as the tragedies in Florida this past weekend. I still haven’t been able to fully process my thoughts on these matters…I’m thinking about writing a post this weekend, if I can gather my thoughts, on everything. I know there are a lot of great resources out there that people need to see (whether you are in the community or not, whether you feel alone, whether you want to DO something, because frankly, thoughts and prayers aren’t enough anymore. Check out my twitter recently @SammiB_MSU, as I’ve been retweeting a lot of resources and news on the matter). Just know that you are not alone. We are all in this together, and we can make a change, we can make a difference. Because fuck, we just have to…But like I said, I’ll save that all for a separate post once I sort through everything. Here’s a much lighter post, which I’ve been trying to get together for a long time, and maybe it can be a bit of happy distraction for a minute. Now let’s get into this…

Summer’s almost upon us! Time to prep for all that sun, warmth, and skin! I’ve compiled just a few of my favorite things to prep myself for and through the summer.

1. Hydrate

I know I say this quite often, but hydration is key for these hot summer days. Whether you’re going for a hike, a day trip on a boat, or just having a chill time outside; make sure you bring plenty of water. I love my Klean Kanteen bottle so much, as it really keeps things cold for hours and hours (same with hot, my coffee will taste just as hot after my half hour walk to work, and stay that way for the majority of my shift, until I finish it that is). It’s also extremely durable; I can’t tell you how many times I’ve dropped this thing and I only have one small dent. Now, I know these Klean Kanteen’s are expensive, so that’s why I’m just focusing on the hydration aspect. But if you got some extra spending money for a really great water bottle, I highly highly suggest it.

2. Get your SPF in!

We all love getting a nice tan, but you can still get a great tan while protecting your skin. I’m not a huge fan of sunscreen, especially on my face because I always feel like it’s clogging my pores. That’s why in the summer I try to make sure at lease some of my full-coverage makeup contains SPF. This way, my skin is still protected, but I don’t really have to think about it as much. I always rave about this foundation I use, but there are plenty of other makeup products out there that contain SPF. I’m sure you’re favorite brands have products with SPF in them, so just be on the lookout!

3. Cooling Down

Depending on where you live, summers can get quite hot. I’ve really been especially loving my makeup setting spray, because not only does it keep my makeup from sweating off my face, it’s magic! Full disclosure, I’m a very sweaty person. My face is usually no exception from this, but I swear every time I wear this spray, my face continuously feels cool and there is no sweat. I’ve heard a lot of other great options, like Primer Water, that I’m looking forward to trying in the next few months. But I am fully behind products like this one.

4. Glistening, Glowing Skin

I’m not going to lie, these two products where the main reason why I wanted to write this post. During the summer, the skin is shining, and you want to be glowing and glistening in the sun. You want your skin to look as healthy as it feels. These two products have really been miracle products, especially the Dry Oil Mist. Toward the beginning of last summer, I got this Coconut & Hibiscus Dry Oil Mist with Songyi Mushroom Extract by Shea Moisture and it’s been amazing. It lasts forever (still using the same bottle), and makes your skin look so glowy and shiny. It makes even the smallest of tan really stand out. I love spraying it on my legs, arms, and chest before heading out into the day. It smells great, lasts a long time throughout the day, and doesn’t transfer easily to clothes or your bed at the end of the day. I loved this product so much, that I bought the same type in a body lotion. The body lotion is great; it gives you the healthy glow while moisturizing your skin and making it nice and soft. The drawbacks to the lotion: As with most Shea Moisture lotions, it is extremely difficult to get out of the bottle. Also, for some reason, this one has an interesting after smell. It’s not entirely unpleasant, but I’m just not a huge fan of it. All in all, though, these products are great for getting your skin in summer condition!

5. Bronzer

For the summer, I swear by a good bronzer. With your skin color slowly changing with the sun, you don’t want to keep buying foundation and other base makeups to match your skin. That’s why I love having a great bronzer. This one by Cargo is great; it’s really pigmented, very build-able so you can add more if your skin is a bit tanner than usual, and blends really nicely. It also has a nice, subdued glitter tone to it, so it gives you dimension but not too much glitter action all over your face. This one also lasts a long time; I think I’ve had it for a couple years now and there’s still a lot left!
